A willingness to affirm the words of others as possessing a certain poetic/prophetic heft might be a prerequisite to understanding. Can we grapple honestly with one another’s words if we’ve decided, in advance, that the speech won’t overcome our critical distance? Or that it will only speak to us religiously, not politically (or vice versa)? We can begin our statements with “speaking as an economist” or “speaking as an English teacher,” but the point of view we adopt can’t contain the breadth of the subject matter.
