I now turned to an evaluation of Harry Stone's role in the mushroom drama that had unfolded. It must be remembered that the finding of the golden mushroom was an event quite independent of what Harry had said or done. The fact that Alice had prepared the message while in a hypnotic state, and that this message preceded by two days the discovery of the mushroom, clearly placed this event out of any manipulation that Harry Stone could have achieved. In spite of the independence of these events, i.e., the finding of the mushroom and Harry Stone's role, the two events were intimately linked in the final result. This was perhaps the most satisfactory evidence that I had had to date that there was something outside of the personalities of Harry Stone and Alice Bouverie that was responsible for what had actually happened. In spite of this realization it was important—I am sure to the reader also—that Harry's personal role be thoroughly evaluated.

My relationship to Harry can be divided into four phases. From June 16, 1954, to June 1, 1955, was the period in which I knew about him mostly through Alice, because I, myself, met him on only a few occasions.

From June 1, 1955, until September 1955 was the period during which I observed Harry's deep trances while he was working daily in the laboratory. The last time he showed any signs of the Ra Ho Tep personality in my presence was on September 8, 1955. On February 7, 1956, he went into deep trance, but not in my presence.

From September 1955 until November 1956 he continued to work at the laboratory as a subject in telepathic experiments. During this period (with the exception noted) there was no manifestation of his trances. He left the employ of the laboratory in November 1956 but continued to live near the laboratory, working at his sculpting. Our friendship continued during this period, and I saw him frequently.

During the period when Harry was under the observation of Alice in New York, she never noticed anything that would lead her to believe that Harry was using his trance performances for ulterior motives. After Harry came to Maine and I had him under my daily observation, I, too, could find no ulterior motive which would lead me to believe that his trances were either conscious or unconscious frauds. During this time I found him to be a loyal, hard-working, and honest chap. His sole motivation in life seemed to be toward bending every effort to become a good sculptor.

His prime means of expression seemed to be through his hands. He was a highly skilled craftsman and a good sculptor. I don't believe I have ever seen Harry Stone read a book. I have seen him thumb through art magazines, looking at pictures, but I do not recollect that he ever bothered to read the text. I have never seen him take any interest in reading or discussions concerning ancient Egyptian life. In fact, the
