FIG. 3.—COVER FOR SCUPPERS WHILST COALING.

Hazel Rod Fenders.—Select a stowage that is plumbed by a derrick, and make a many-legged sling to take several at a time.

When placing these fenders, hoist them out and float them to their proper positions; do the same for returning them, and so wash all the coal dust out before hoisting in.

Coaling Suits.—Coaling suits are a source of trouble if not properly looked after. The custom of scrubbing them and hanging them up to dry is no doubt a good one when it can be carried out, but only too often this scheme falls through, owing to bad weather or ship proceeding to sea immediately after coaling; in war or manœuvre periods it is well-nigh impossible.

A scheme adopted in some of H.M. ships, which is successful, is to supply each mess with a painted bag. A proper stowage is found for these bags near each mess, and coaling suits are shaken and placed in the bags after coaling.

Endless Band Stowers.—The endless band system, which is greatly in use on shore, is not generally known or used in H.M. ships.

There are many ways in which this system can be advantageously used, and the example chosen is a coal bag stower in one of H.M. ships.

In this case six hundred coal bags are stowed underneath a searchlight platform, and, using the ordinary hand-to-hand throwing, the operation of stowing took ten men about three-quarters of an hour; with the ‘stower’ the bags were stowed in twelve minutes by four men, thereby greatly facilitating the cleaning of the ship after coaling.

The canvas band is kept running round at fair speed, and the bags are thrown on to the band; the band will throw the bags well clear at the top if the motor is run fast enough.

Derricks for Coaling.—Stow all coaling derricks in their proper position or as near to it as possible, and keep the guys and topping lifts always on the derricks.
