The site of the naval base of Misenum, seen from Monte Procida. The greatest naval base of the Imperial navy and headquarters of its senior fleet, the Classis Misenensis. The harbour is formed from two flooded volcanic craters, the outer protected by moles. Little now remains of what was once a massive installation with shipyards, jetties and piers, shipsheds, workshops, storehouses and victualling depots. Additionally, there were dozens of warships and thousands of men, together with the town that surrounded it all. The fleet prefect’s house was on the Cape, facing the camera, with the base surrounding the basins and the civilian town in the foreground and to the left. The great cistern is within the low hill to the left of the inner basin.
