Chapter 15

The stadium is huge, rows and rows of people disappearing up towards the sky, towering above them even high up here on the stage. Search lights cast beams into the dark sky, swooping around in large circles and the wooden frame vibrates beneath his feet.

The concert is nearly over and he’s whipped the crowd into a frenzy. He can smell their hot sticky bodies, their adrenaline and excitement. And he can barely hear himself, the notes from his guitar or the beat of the drum over the roar of the excitement.

Usually he’s so lost in the music, consumed by the emotion he’s pummeling into every single goddamn note that he’s hardly aware of the crowd out there, with him every step of the way.

Tonight it’s different. His eyes keep flipping to the Omega hidden in the shadows, a baseball cap pulled over the crown of her head and another clipboard prop in her hand. They’re still going with the cover story that she’s a new assistant to Kim, the others playing along with it, and although the stadium staff don’t give her a second glance, he’s not sure his roadies are buying it. They know Kim. They know she’s the last person who’d want an assistant and the fact Mick is clearly babysitting her (under his instructions) is a bit of a give away too.

And then there’s the way his gaze keeps floating back to her. Partly because she looks damn hot in the tight jeans and tank top Kim’s found her and partly because those little expressions of excitement keep flickering across her face. Excitement and awe. It’s doing something to his insides. It’s more than just lust. Whenever he reaches for a note, lingers on a word, that expression of awe washes over her face and it makes his legs weak.

People tell him he’s a great musician all the time. Tell him how much they love the band’s music. How it’s changed their life. But he’s never really seen it before. Never witnessed it or believed it. It’s just something people say to rock stars. Not the truth.

Now he sees it plainly, can feel it in the bond lodged in his stomach, how much he’s moving her. It isn’t lust. It’s something more pure, more passionate.

Fuck, he could get used to that. It makes him feel invincible, like he possesses untold power in the tips of his fingers, in the vibration of his throat.

He’s playing her favourite song; the one that sends shivers spiraling up and down her spine and her lip trembling. His voice is so deep, yet almost whispered, and he feels as if he is singing the words just to her. Maybe he is. He turns his head now and finds her. Her face is taut with emotion, her eyes black like the late-night sky.

The song dies softly away, the last note lingering from his mouth, the crowd silent, awestruck. He has them in the palm of his hand and he knows Layla’s not the only one with tears sliding down her cheeks.
