It’s Good to Be a Fan

OFTEN, IT’S THE TOXIC VOICES from toxic spaces that send us walking to begin with. But to turn this question on its head, what voices speak in a way that brings you life right now? In what spaces do you find the truth your soul longs to hear? Are they different voices or different spaces than the ones that mattered to you before? Is there a summons of the Spirit in your yearning that wants to break you open to a broader way of seeing God and of seeing your neighbor?

Not all guides are wise guides, and even the ones who are wise are not equally wise or equally helpful for every part of the journey. You may be at a place where some of the voices that spoke into your life before are not serving you for where you are on the journey now. You get to change the channel. That doesn’t mean you have to dismiss anything good or valuable you ever gleaned from them before.1 You get to take the things with you that you need to take with you and not take the things with you that you don’t.

But there are times in the transition when you actually do need to unsubscribe, for the moment—to stop listening. And there are moments when you know you have a hunger for voices that are established, mature voices in the spiritual life. If you need some kind of permission slip telling you it’s okay to look elsewhere to find the wise guides that you need for the person you know you can and must become, then consider this your permission slip.

You get to decide whether it’s time to walk away from some voices altogether or to say, as the disciples do to the unknown stranger on the Emmaus road, “Stay with us.”
