After Griffin was gone and Sam had joined Willa upstairs, Marion and Camille were left to clean up.

Marion forcefully washed the dishes, letting the pans loudly hit the bottom of the sink.

“Something you want to say to me, Momma?”

“No,” Marion said, spitting the reply.

“Well, your dishwashing technique certainly suggests that you have something on your mind.”

“Maybe I do, but I’m going to bite my tongue.” Marion looked to Camille. “There isn’t anything I could say to you right now that you aren’t thinking yourself.”

“I know.”

“Willa is resilient, but the last thing that child needs right now is a revolving door of confusing men.”

“Mother, there is no revolving door.”

“Mack Phillips has caused your father an unbelievable amount of pain. To think that you have been going around behind our backs and seeing that man. I have no words, Camille. I raised you better than that. He has no morals, to file this lawsuit against us. He has made a lot of enemies in this town. You should hear what people say about him.”

“I’m not interested in hearing the town gossip about Mack. He has been nothing but nice to Willa and me. But you’re right. I know the lawsuit has hurt Dad, and I don’t want to add to that pain.”

Marion softened, smirking at her daughter. “Now, Griffin. Nothing but good gossip about him. He did look very nice tonight, standing at the stove helping you with dinner.”

Camille rolled her eyes. “I’m going to tuck Willa into bed.”

“See you in the morning,” Marion said, humming to herself.
