Given that a home, a community, or a nation’s virtue can best be judged by how it cares for its children, this is a critical moral question.

We explore that question in this chapter.

The first point we must understand is the one I just asked you to take note of. When children live in a cohabiting home, they most likely live with only one biological parent—typically with Mom and her boyfriend. This makes a tremendous difference, given that children living in married step-homes—compared to children living with their own married mothers and fathers—face significantly increased levels of many important developmental problems.4 It matters for children who the adults in their home actually are.

For a child to have an unrelated parenting-adult in the home, says eminent Rutgers family sociologist David Popenoe, is no small matter:

Social scientists used to believe that, for positive child outcomes, stepfamilies were preferable to single-parent families. Today, we are not so sure. Stepfamilies typically have an economic advantage, but some recent studies indicate that the children of stepfamilies have as many behavioral and emotional problems as the children of single-parent families, and possibly more. … Stepfamily problems, in short, may be so intractable that the best strategy for dealing with them is to do everything possible to minimize their occurrence.5 (emphasis added)
