In Australia, it is not just people on unemployment, disability or age pensions who receive financial support from the government. There are, for example, child care rebates and family tax benefits that effectively are cash payments to those on a low income who have children.
Nobody complains about this governmental largesse, but we should. Such payments are an acknowledgement that a regular pay packet is not enough to survive on, and lower paid workers need financial help. In doing so, the government is effectively subsidising business.
