Chapter Eighteen

It was a grey day, drizzling and cool, when Posy set out on the mission to buy a budget wedding dress. She was tired, mainly thanks to Henry waking her up with a 2am booty call from Belgium. She should be used to the late-night phone sex by now – they were the norm when Henry was away – but Belgium was only an hour ahead of England. Surely he didn’t have to call quite so late? But some of her pops’s ultra-strong coffee had fortified her and she was looking forward to the morning ahead. She’d briefly considered pulling one of her mother’s vintage ballgowns out of their archive instead of forking out for a dress but she and Lucas had agreed that a day of ‘saying yes to the dress’ might help convince Hardstark of their legitimacy. So Lucas had adapted the spreadsheet to accommodate a little purchase and so here Posy was, ready for the strangest dress shop of her life. In addition to Hardstark tagging along, Posy had roped Tara in for support at the last minute, but as Tara had been in the midst of dropping off her kids with her mother-in-law, there hadn’t been time to explain the matter thoroughly.

As she trundled down the main street of Coaldale town centre, she spied Tara waiting outside Symphony of Chiffon, taking what appeared to be a very fraught call.

“No, no Loretta, I don’t want Angus to eat any of that,” Tara declared into her phone, rolling her eyes at Posy in greeting. “Because he’ll throw it all right back up again, you mark my words. Yes… Yes, I know he’s asking nicely. He always does.” She lowered the phone and mouthed sorry. Posy smiled and checked her own phone as Tara berated her former mother-in-law further. She glanced at the revised budget that Lucas had sent, hoping she’d read it wrong the first time but no, she hadn’t. A measly hundred quid for a wedding dress. She shuddered. That wouldn’t even cover a basic frock from the likes of – ye Gods – Coast! She gazed in the window of the high-end wedding boutique, her heart aching at the sight of Chantilly lace and pristine satin. There wasn’t a chance of her tiny budget stretching to a single thing in that shop – even Posy knew that. But, thanks to the power of social media, she may have discovered a work-around to find something special.

“Argh!” Tara finished her call and threw her hands up in the air. “My fucking ex-mother-in-law, I swear to fucking God!”

“What’s she done now?” Posy breezily air-kissed her friend.

“Just the usual, trying to feed my lactose-intolerant child ice-cream,” Tara said. “Well, I almost hope Angus does have a reaction. See how she likes Cherry Madness splattered all over her bloody Le Corbusier.” She closed her eyes and let out a long breath. “Anyway. Enough of Loretta. Why am I meeting you outside a bridal shop?” Her eyes widened in trepidation. “Did Henry…?”

“Ah no, I have a confession to make.
