Pillar 3: Evolving Potential
A reconnection entrepreneur takes direction from his understanding of how the system he wants to affect works when it is healthy. He uses this understanding as the pattern for what he wants to bring into existence. This is quite different from simply trying to arrest disorder in the system. Put another way, rather than fixing illness, a reconnection entrepreneur promotes higher expressions of health.
For example, in spite of the technological, distribution, and financial prowess of humanity at this time in history, hunger continues to be a serious problem all over the world. Although stopgap efforts to feed the hungry will be important and necessary as long as hunger persists, the reconnection entrepreneur takes aim at the systems that keep the problem in place. To do this, he must design a business to transform the purposes and dynamics of the existing food generation and distribution system so that its overall potential can be evolved.
The first time I heard Charlie Krone, a mentor of mine, describe the core process of the food system as having to do with “bonding,” it seemed far-fetched to me. But when I looked at bonding at the chemical, biological, and social levels, it began to make sense. Chemically, food provides the mineral constituents of living systems. Biologically, it represents reciprocal exchange within complex networks of systems. Socially, it connects us to place, community, and the celebration of life as we gather to break bread. Taken together, these purposes reveal some of the potential inherent in the food system.
When reconnection entrepreneurs working on the food system connect people to bonding, they evoke conscience and emotional relatedness in all stakeholders. Their enterprises offer a more compelling experience, because bonding is present. Innovation based on core processes like bonding actualize a system’s true potential.
