“You want to do what?” Mrs. Dodgeson finally looked away from her computer screen to squint at Erin suspiciously through her thick-framed glasses.

“Take Becca to the park,” Erin repeated.

It was only a single day after waking up and discovering she was missing three entire calendar days. No ghost-related incidents had happened since then, but Erin was on edge. Every little sound, every little weird feeling had her checking over her shoulder or wanting to hide under the covers. Her desire to return to Pemblebrook Park had to do with several factors. One, she just wanted to escape this house where the ghost showed up in mirrors and took control of her when she napped. Two, she was jealous that this “other Erin” had been able to visit the park and she had no recollection of it whatsoever. Three, maybe actually visiting it could jog some memory of her time there. And four, most importantly, she hoped to run into Tara and finally get some answers.

“Your wrist is still sprained, honey. You wouldn’t really be able to play,” Mrs. Dodgeson said, starting to turn her chair back to the computer screen.

“I wasn’t able to play on Sunday and we still went,” Erin pointed out. “And I can just watch Becca while she’s on the playground.”

Mrs. Dodgeson paused her typing and gave Erin a side-eyed look. It was odd for Erin to offer to watch Becca. Her parents knew she viewed it more as a chore—one that Erin did most of the time without complaint, but a chore nonetheless.

“Well …” her mother said slowly. “The library is across the street from the park and I could use a change of scenery in writing this chapter. I guess it’s all right, then, if you’re really fine with it.”

Erin nodded eagerly, relief spreading through her.

“Go get Becca ready, then,” Erin’s mother said as she started packing up her laptop bag.

Not needing to be told twice, Erin hurried into Becca’s room to find her little sister on her bed, surrounded by her stuffed animals and seven crayons deep into a princess coloring book.

“Becca, do you want to go to the park?” Erin asked as she went to her sister’s closet to grab her shoes.

Becca dropped her crayons and her face lit up with a grin. “Yeah! Can Mr. Fuzzy Hooves come?”

Any other time, Erin would’ve tried to talk her little sister out of bringing along her stuffed giraffe, but she nodded and grabbed Becca’s sparkly pink backpack and tucked Mr. Fuzzy Hooves inside.

Ten minutes later, they were ready and in the car. Mrs. Dodgeson pulled out of the driveway and headed down the long road. Erin watched the other houses pass by, and once again looked for Tara. But she didn’t see the girl, so she hoped she’d be at the park.

For the hundredth time, she wondered what rumor it was that Tara knew about that treehouse. Would the story behind it help Erin figure out how the ghost could finally move on and rest,
