CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR

Bodie reacted instantly. The rogue CIA team were the least of their worries now. He ignored Daytona and the others and waved his team back down the hallway. At the top of the stairs they paused.

Daytona glared after them. “Don’t come after us again,” she said. “This diamond will be the death of you all.”

Bodie thought she might be talking from bitter experience, but ignored her. Pang was chomping at the bit, staring first at Daytona and then down the stairs. Bodie could almost read the question on his face: Who can I kill first?

“Out,” he said. “Nice and tight, and quiet. We don’t want a battle tonight.”

Everyone nodded except Pang, who looked scornful. Bodie searched his head for an exit strategy.

“Far end of the hall,” Gunn said. “There’s a balcony outside the window. You can use that to climb—”

Gunfire interrupted him. The guards had discovered the mercs. Bodie glanced back to see Daytona and her team pushing their way into the Sablés’ bedroom. Within seconds he heard the pounding of boots on the stairs.

Shit, too late.

Knowing what was coming, he gave the order to scatter and threw himself on the floor. Seconds later, dark figures appeared, wearing black combat fatigues, helmets and face masks. They carried semi-automatic weapons at shoulder height, aiming them left and right as they went.

Bodie didn’t want to fire first, despite knowing he ought to. The element of surprise could win any battle. He needn’t have worried though, because as soon as he set eyes on the mercs Pang let loose.

Bullets flew down the hallway, striking the first two mercs, sending one sprawling against the wall and the other toppling backward. A third tried to scramble out of the way but Pang picked him off with a head shot.

“We can do this,” he said. “Follow me.”

Bodie wasn’t about to risk fighting a larger army of mercenaries no matter how good Pang believed he was. “No,” he said. “We must leave quietly. I’ll explain the finer details later.”

They backed up. Jemma reached the window first and cracked it open. She looked out. “Nice big balcony,” she said. “Looks sturdy. Give me two.”

She levered herself up onto the window-sill and jumped out onto the balcony. Bodie knew she’d be tying a climbing rope to the bars and readying herself to rappel down. On the other side of the hallway, the Sablés’ bedroom door had closed. Bodie heard nothing.

“We good?” he asked Jemma through the comms.

“Moving now.”

“Idiots aren’t firing back.” Pang loosed another two shots to keep the mercs at bay. “Don’t make ’em like they used to.”

“They’re not firing back because they don’t know who we are,” Heidi explained. “They’ll have orders to capture the CIA team alive so they can retrieve the diamond.”

“Ah,” Pang replied and fired again. “Fuckin’ pussies.”

Bodie cocked his head then as Jemma cried out, “There’s more!”

Bullets smashed glass and rattled the window frame. Bodie was showered in razor-sharp shards. Jemma screamed. Heidi ran to the window, leaned out, and opened fire with her handgun.
