24. The End of the Concert

The Big Chief talked.

"In the car," Fortner tells me, "he asked whether I was \bwehr or Gestapo. I replied that I was a German army officer. He looked relieved. Then he said, 'So far as Tm concerned, it's all over. I shall tell you certain things, but you tvill have to accept the fact that I'm not going to tell you everything.' Needless to say, Giering and I were stunned by this unhoped for statement—if the Big Chief agreed to collaborate, it would mean the end of Soviet espionage in the west. And so, even in our preliminary discussions, I did my best :o establish human contact with him. We sat drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes as we talked about his life and his family. He chatted quite freely, and I must say I listened with unfeigned interest and sympathy. He was an admirable man, very calm and restrained. I felt I was exchanging remi-aiscences with an old colleague."

After the life story came the evening lecture. The members of the Kommando listened dumbfounded as Trepper treated them to a lecture on the art of espionage. First he outlined the broad principles: any network needed a rigid separation of units, the systematic use of cover names, a continual process of decentralization (so that no one agent could name more than a handful of others), and a strict separation of pianists (who are especially vulnerable) and the remainder of the net-work. Trepper then set forth what he regarded as standard security precautions. A good agent, he said, should never carry weapons, which would put him at the mercy of a routine police check. He should do without a car. He should live in the suburbs, where it was easier to detect if you were being shadowed than in the crowded city streets.
