Chapter 16

“Where the fuck have you been?” Dante growled from his spot near the fireplace.

Nathaniel stared coldly at him. “How is that any of your business?”

“No one saw you leave. You jump out your goddamn window or something?” Dante said.

“If I wanted you to know my fucking schedule, I’d email it to you. Now shut your fucking mouth or I’ll shut it for you.”

Dante bared his fangs before standing and stalking past him. He shoved a yearling out of the way, barking harsh laughter when the woman slammed into the wall so hard that her head made a dent in the plaster.

“You’re paying to have that fixed, you asshole,” Ray called after Dante. He shook his head and approached Nathaniel and Clementine, a short dark-haired human at his heels. “Jesus, it’s like they want to live in a fucking hovel.”

He stopped in front of Nathaniel, giving Clementine a brief look. “I see you haven’t turned your pet yet.”

Nathaniel willed himself to sound casual. “I’m making her my familiar for a while before I turn her.”

“Seriously? Her?” Ray looked Clementine up and down.

“Yes,” Nathaniel said. “She’s free to come and go as she pleases.”

“Dude, c’mon. I’m all for you having a familiar but pick something better.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Clementine said.

“It means, pretty little pet, that men make better familiars than women.”

“Oh, I get it. You’re a sexist pig as well as a blood sucking leech,” Clementine said.

Nathaniel wanted to laugh. Instead, he glared at Clem and gave her a hard slap to the ass. “Watch your tongue, human.”

She flinched and rubbed at her ass but stared defiantly at Ray. The vampire rolled his eyes. “See, man? The women talk back too much, plus you get distracted by pussy.”

“I won’t be distracted,” Nathaniel said. “It’s average pussy at best.”

“Fuck you,” Clem said. “It’s the best pussy you’ve ever had.”

Nathaniel slapped her ass again, hard enough to make her cry out and pain etch into her face. Guilt flooded through him and it took all of his willpower not to pull her into his arms and say he was sorry.

Ray bellowed laughter. “Jesus, your little pet has attitude. Maybe she won’t fuck up being your familiar that much. Speaking of which…”

He turned to the human standing just behind him. “You get what I asked for today?”

“Yes.” The man stepped forward. He was on the shorter side with beady rat-like eyes. He’d been Ray’s familiar for months now, but Nathaniel had no idea what his name was. He’d probably been told it a few times but in his previous life as a vampire, nothing had really mattered to him but feeding, fucking, and avoiding being turned to ash by Calissa.

“So, I, uh, got a phone set up for you again. I had your other one disconnected after we, uh, figured you’d been ashed by the humans.” He handed over a phone. Nathaniel stared at it before shoving it into his pocket. He’d had no use for a phone and only carried it so that Calissa could text him.
