CARI

I peer through the partially opened doors to Wynter’s workshop.

She and Gessi are flitting this way and that, gracefully dancing between stations—Gessi weaving her earth magic, and Wynter using her energy power to mix and stir things together before examining them under microscopes.

My heart expands in my chest but is instantly dashed by a heaping dose of…

Helplessness.

My friends are working themselves to the bone trying to create a cure for Lock, for my mate, and I’m doing…nothing.

I would give up all my power if I could have Gessi’s abilities for one day so I could actually be useful. But as I am right now? Ice is no match for the poison keeping Lock asleep, keeping his powers weak.

My nightmare from the other night streaks through me.

“I can’t stay any longer, darling.” Lock’s words echo in the back of my mind. The way he’d held me, the way he’d apologized, it was almost like he was aware.

But that can’t be right, can it? His powers are flickers of what they usually are thanks to the poison, I can feel that much down our bond. There is no way he had enough left to enter my mind and create that bridge between us…right?

Something calls to me, an answer just out of reach, and it leaves an unsettling feeling in my stomach. I look up again, watching Gessi weave her hands this way and that, creating yet another beautiful flower in hopes of finding a cure.

The uneasiness in my veins is more likely a testament to how miserably I’m failing my mate than any grand piece of a puzzle I’m missing, but I can’t help it. It feels like that. Like I’m missing something just out of reach. If I could just wrap my fingers around it—

“You look like you could use a drink,” Blaize says, materializing right next to me.

I jolt away from the door, breathing out a shaken breath at how quietly he snuck up on me. He flashes me an easy smile, then shrugs.

I spare one last glance at the pair working in the room, then swallow down another wave of guilt at being useless.

“Come on,” Blaize says, motioning down the hall. “I found out where Huxton hides the good stuff.”

I nod as I follow him down the hall. He’s dressed in a casual pair of black pants and a shirt made of the same fabric, one sleeve torn off to show off his sliver arm. I’ve never really had the chance to study the array of tattoos. There’s a little splash of red in the form of a star inked within the silver, and it really is as beautiful as Gessi has always described.

After weaving up and down hallways and climbing a few floors, Blaize finally holds a door open for me, ushering me into a simple little room that must be one of Huxton’s studies. The walls are lined with ancient tomes, the floor lined with thick, decorative rugs with a few pieces of leather furniture that form a half circle around a stone hearth.
