It still annoys me that the numbers on the cab sides don’t line up properly. I must learn to put this behind me and move on.

The wheels of toy trains must also be quartered, partly for authenticity1 but also because quartering evens out the effect of any sloppiness in the rod arrangement. It is vital that this is done accurately. It doesn’t actually matter if the wheels end up quartered at 88 degrees or 92 degrees, but each coupled axle must be the same.

For serious toy train mending perverts, optical devices and jigs are available for this job. It is also possible to do it by eye, if you have a sense of the right angle worthy of Euclid. When reassembling the wheels and axles, check and check that you have the quartering correct and consistent before you push the wheels fully home. If you don’t, there will be a tight spot somewhere within one revolution of the wheels, and the train will progress with a wholly unconvincing lollop. It will never run properly with incorrectly quartered wheels, and you may as well drop-kick the lot into the village pond.

This is not a problem with models of diesel engines2, which makes them a good place to start.

1 Although it must be said that, unless you run your trainset in some sort of surrealist hall of mirrors, you can’t see both sides at the same time.

2 Except some shunters.
