Chapter 60

Gucci

“‘I’ma be fresh as hell if the Feds watching. I’ma be fresh as hell if the Feds watching.’”

The sound of my phone jolted me from a nap. A glance at the screen indicated the caller was Mario. Maybe he’d heard the news and was calling to check on me, or maybe he was calling to declare his innocence. Either way, I couldn’t have answered even if I wanted to. My face was swollen and hurt like hell. In view of that, I waited for the call to end, then sent him a text message: Can’t talk. What’s up? About half a second went by before the phone beeped.

Tell that nigga he’s a dead man!

I reread the words twice before replying.

What are you talking about?

Don’t act like you don’t know he tried to shoot up my fucking house.

By now, my heart was racing. I got ready to respond, but another message came through.

It was you who said I did it. Just for that, I should handle you too!

Mario, I had nothing to do with this. I swear!

I slammed the phone down on the nightstand, grabbed a robe, and went to find Cartier.

As I wandered around the palatial estate, my mind raced at a million thoughts per minute. The shit was so disturbing I was beginning to get a headache.

“Ms. Gucci,” the housekeeper called from down the hall, “Mr. Cartier is in the sunroom asking for you.”

“Okay, thank you,” I mumbled with a smile. I continued walking, then stopped. “Which way is the sunroom again?”

It took her a minute to understand what I was asking before she replied. “Keep going down to the end of the hall. It’s the first door on the left.” She smiled, then returned to complete the task she was performing.

On my way down the spacious hallway, I glanced through the glass at the gardener who was busy spreading mulch. The yard was really coming together. There were dogwood trees, perennials, roses, and lots of greenery. It was absolutely beautiful. I couldn’t wait for Maria to start walking so I could take her out there.

Knock, knock. I noticed Cartier sitting on one of the chairs with the phone up to his ear. “Good morning, baby,” he said.

“What did you do?” I was furious.

“I handled that shit! That’s what I did!”

I wanted to tell this nigga that what he actually did was make a big fucking mess.
