Zachariah felt as if heâd been punched in the gut. He had gone after her to protect her. Not once since he stormed after her and her sister did he think it would lead to this moment. When she had pressed her teeth to her bottom lip, all he could think about was pressing his lips to hers. He wanted her, but somehow he had to rein in that desire. This was not the time to give into temptation.
He met her gaze, and heat filled him to his very soul. âNo,â he told her. His voice was infused with the passion he failed to control. âOne kiss between us would never be enough.â
âIt would only take one kiss to ruin me.â She kept her gaze focused on him. It only served to make his blood heat even further. âWhat is stopping you from giving in? You want to.â
âThe day I give in to your siren call we will not share one measly kiss.â He leaned down so his mouth was near her ear. He had to make his intentions clear to her. This thing between them would not go away, and she had to be prepared. âWhen I press my lips on yours, I will kiss you again, and again, and again.â She gasped and tried to step back. Zachariah looped his arm around her waist and held her in place. His tone was husky as he finished speaking, âUntil our bodies are melded together in a synchronicity and passion that burns so hot your ruination will be the last thing you consider.â
She lifted her hand to his chest. It was like a hot brand through his coat. He wanted to pull her closer and kiss her as he had described, but that would be foolish. This was not the time or the place for kissing. One day soon, he would kiss her as he had described. She was his future. He knew that now and was mad he hadnât seen it before. Even though he reveled in her closeness, he knew she wasnât ready, so he stepped back.
She met his gaze and said, âThen it is fortunate that day will never arrive.â Her voice was breathy, and he might have believed her if she could have replied in that haughty tone she had reserved for him in the past.
He grinned and shook his head. âItâs not a matter of if, but when. I have resigned myself to my fate. Perhaps it is time that you do the same.â
She stared into his eyes. Lady Violet Keene was a bold and confident woman. Zachariah liked that about her even when they had been bickering. âI donât believe in fate.â That cold tone had returned. He must have frightened her.
He chuckled softly. âIt doesnât matter if you do or not. Fate believes in you, and it will direct you in the end.â
She opened her mouth to retort, but held back when she heard shouts from behind them. She turned toward the sound and stared into the distance.
