CHAPTER 12
She’d been on the water for nearly two hours when she finally saw the outline of the island in front of her.
“Oh thank heaven,” she said out loud, her arms and shoulders aching. She’d gotten off course so many times and found herself drifting with the currents more than once. Santiago had overestimated her abilities, but it didn’t matter; she was almost there.
She scanned what she could see of the island, looking for a good place to land. What she would do once she got there, she had no idea. In a panic, she realized that she didn’t have a plan.
“What the hell am I going to do?” she muttered to herself. “It’s not like it’s a city and I can just blend in.”
Without even realizing it, she’d stopped paddling, but it hadn’t mattered. The current pushing her toward the island hand caught hold of her kayak, and her momentum was holding steady. She set the oar across her lap, resting her arms and watching the shoreline for a moment.
She felt defeated. The island was huge, and there was no telling where Antonio was. Or even where any of the other shifters were. If there were homes or any other sign of civilization, the entire island was asleep; any lights there might be, off.
Dipping her oar back into the water, she began rowing again. It wouldn’t help her to get lost in the fear of the unknown.
“Now isn’t the time to become a cautious person,” she chided herself, ignoring her protesting muscles as she pushed on. If she’d been a cautious person to begin with, she wouldn’t be in this mess.
And she wouldn’t have met Antonio.
Bolstered by thoughts of him, she dug into the water with renewed vigor. The water was getting rougher the closer she got to shore. Tiny swells pushed her up into the air, the water crested slightly before dumping her back down again. She was almost to the breakers, which were thankfully not monstrous.
They were still going to be tricky to navigate.
I’m probably going to end up in the water, she thought, preparing herself for what might be inevitable. She was close to shore and could make it the rest of the way, but she was going to give staying in the kayak her best shot.
Another swell caught her off-guard, this time bringing her much higher than before and breaking roughly, bouncing her around in the white sea foam and pitching her from side-to-side. It took everything she had to remain upright as the wave rushed toward the shore, leaving her behind.
When she was a teen, she used to take her boogie board out into the water, catching swells like these and riding them into the shore before heading back into the water again. Maybe the principle was the same, and she just needed to go after the swell instead of hoping to ride it.
When the next swell came, she was ready, dipping the oar into the water on the right side and rowing as fast as she could to propel the kayak forward.
