After Graham’s car had disappeared down the driveway, lurching over the holes and leaving a large red-orange dustcloud behind it, Tuck lumbered back into his house. His head felt like a balloon that someone kept blowing air into and that at any second would burst.

He walked into the kitchen and stood in front of the refrigerator and pressed his forehead against the cool door. Then he opened it and grabbed another beer.

Then Tuck walked to his bedroom running his hand along the wainscoting that lined the walls. The little cracks between each plank felt rough, uneven, like they could cut his hand if he wasnt careful. Tuck moved his hands in front of his face and looked at them.

The room was dark, but he could see that his knuckles were still badly swollen from last night. His fingers seemed to be twisted up and going in different directions. They had been broken so many times.

He wondered how they’d feel for the fight. It didnt matter. He could go down quick, get this business over with. Tuck took a pull from the brown bottle. Swallowed.

He stood there in his bedroom. He turned on the light and then he sat on the bed and grabbed his keys from the nightstand. Last night’s purse of three hundred and seventy-five dollars was rolled compactly up into the empty light socket of his bedside lamp. Tuck removed the lampshade with his left hand and with his right, reached into the bulbless socket and grabbed the roll of twenties, tens, and ones. Then he stuffed it down his boot and left the room, flicking off the light on his way out.
