Chapter 13

Liz busied herself by showering and thinking about making breakfast. When the house phone rang, she ignored it. But, as the answering machine picked up, she heard Joe’s voice fill the room.

“Hey, it’s me.” He waited as she rushed over to answer it.

“Hey,” she said, her heart racing as she remembered what they had done earlier. How her body had responded to his touches, his kisses.

“I have somewhat of a mess down here. It’s going to take me longer than I had expected.”

“What happened?” she asked.

“Some…one broke in and smashed a bunch of products,” he said, a little hesitant.

“Okay.” She frowned. “Need any help?”

“No, but I’m having Xtina and Jess head your way. After last night, I don’t think it’s wise to leave you alone for too long.”

She was about to tell him she was fine, but then someone spoke to him.

“Listen, I have to go. Jacob’s here. If all goes well, I’ll see you for dinner.”

“Okay,” she said and listened as he hung up quickly.

A few minutes later, she had just pulled out some eggs and a pan when the front doorbell chimed.

She let Jess and Xtina in and smiled when Jess held a large box and an extra cup of coffee.

“I brought breakfast.” She handed her a cup. “Carmel latte, extra cream.” She smiled at her.

“How did…”

“Witch.” She pointed to her chest with a smile.

“Right.” Liz laughed and motioned for them to come on in.

“Having Jess as a friend does have its perks,” Xtina joked as she opened the large box of sweets from the Coffee Corner. “We dropped some food off to Joe and Jacob before heading over.”

Liz rushed over and grabbed a few plates from the cupboard and set them on the table as everyone settled around the table. Joe’s laptop was already opened, waiting for her to start her research.

“Brea and Ethan had to go into town today but will be by later,” Jess said, taking a sticky bun from the box and sitting down at the table. “Our men are helping Joe clean up the mess.”

“What happened?” she asked, taking her own cinnamon roll.

“Every bottle in the store was shattered.” Xtina frowned.

“What?” She gasped.

“Joe wouldn’t tell us, yet.” Jess frowned. “And, I couldn’t…” She shook her head.

“I couldn’t see it either.” Xtina wore a matching frown. “But we’ll find out tonight. I hope it’s okay, but we’re going to stick it out here today.”

“Yes.” She was thankful for the company. She didn’t think that after last night, she would want to be left alone. “I was going to try and do some more research.”

“Us too,” Jess said through a mouthful. “God, this baby is hungry.” She laughed and reached for another roll.

“When are you due?” Liz asked.

“May.” Jess smiled.

“It’s a boy,” Xtina added. “The first in a long line of female witches.”

“How… strange,” Liz admitted, earning a chuckle from both ladies. “Everything has been off since I came into town.” She sighed. “I still think I’m in a dream.”

“A nightmare, you mean?” Jess added.
