I squirmed as my eyelids fluttered open to the sound of beeps and dings. I swiveled my head one way and then the other. Sam sat in a chair beside me, sleeping with an IV that was tethered to me stuck in his arm. I closed my eyes again then opened them. No. No. No. Why is there a line of blood from him into me? I grabbed the needle and ripped it out. Blood immediately dribbled onto the stark-white blanket, soaking through.

Footsteps, sounding like a horse in a gallop, grew louder before Jordyn came running in. “You can’t do that.”

Like hell I can’t.

Sam shot off the chair like a cannon being fired in war. “Get Dr. Vieira!” Sam shouted at Jordyn, like it was her fault.

Clenching my fists, I snarled at the green-eyed vampire.

He growled back as the room began to shake.

I mashed my lips together. “Really, vampire. You have to use your elemental powers on me?”

He flinched, and his eyes bulged. “I didn’t do that.” He removed the IV from his arm, gathered my needle, then placed it on the table beside my bed. Then he traipsed over to the window.

Sun glinted off the tall buildings in the distance.

“Maybe it’s a small tremor from an earthquake, then,” I offered.

“Boston doesn’t have earthquakes,” he said. “There’s construction going on across the street. I’m sure that’s what caused it.” He returned to my bedside, his long legs eating up the vast space.

My gaze took a long, slow hike up and down his body while I tried to reboot my brain. Damn, if he wasn’t a sight for sore eyes. His Navy SEAL T-shirt stretched across his muscled chest. His jeans were slung low on his hips, and his black hair was tied back into a low ponytail.

I licked my chapped lips. “Why are you giving me blood? Did I lose that much? I only hit my head.”

He examined me like a doctor. His lush green eyes had way too much emotion in them that I couldn’t quite figure out. He was holding something back.

“Oh my God. I have the vampire gene, don’t I?”

No response as he continued to cast an unnerving look at me.

“Sam, you’re frightening me. Am I dying of cancer?” My mom had died of breast cancer. “Did the doctors find something?” Please say no. “Does the drug in those darts have some sort of poison in them?”

It seemed as though someone had cut out his tongue as he loomed over me.

“Talk, dammit!” I shouted, and the bed moved. There must be some heavy construction going on across the street. “Something bad happened, didn’t it?” The only thing that came to mind was Rianne. “Please tell me you didn’t harm Rianne.”

He sneered.

I closed my eyes briefly, counting to three. I swore if he hurt her, I would break his neck. If he killed her, I would claw out his heart, cut off his dick, and poke out his eyes, in no particular order.

“She was fine when we left Montana.
