Barnabas Supported the Work of the Kingdom (Acts 11:19-26)

Barnabas was sent by the church to follow up with a group of Christians at Antioch who had begun sharing the gospel with Greeks and having great success too. Verses 23-24 say that “when he [Barnabas] arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.” Not only that, but Barnabas then went and found Paul and brought him to Antioch. Together they spent a whole year with the new Christians, encouraging them and helping them grow in their faith. With one stroke, Barnabas strengthened the church at Antioch and helped Paul find and engage in a fruitful and productive new ministry.

Barnabas Gave John Mark a Second Chance (Acts 15:36-41)

We’ve already seen Barnabas give Paul a shot. Now he gives John Mark a second chance over the objections of Paul. John Mark had joined Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey, but abandoned them to return home before their mission was completed. Paul was dead set against taking John Mark with them the next time, but Barnabas was just as determined to give him a second chance. Barnabas placed a higher priority on encouraging John Mark in his ministry than continuing to work with Paul, and thus two new missionary teams were born. Paul took Silas, and Barnabas took John Mark.

There is no such thing as a “self-made” man. We are made up of thousands of others. Everyone who has ever done a kind deed for us or spoken one word of encouragement to us, has entered into the makeup of our character and of our thoughts as well as our success.
