Resentment Defined

I've asserted that emotions are not good or bad. The real issue is what we do with them. Resentment is unresolved anger left over from a negative event in our lives. It is anger we've allowed to stew until it reaches a point of emotional overload. By the time we resent people, we harbor animosity toward them and may wish that tragedy befall them.

Resentment, much like bitterness, begins innocently enough and then gains steam-a lot of steam. Resentment develops after we've made a decision, perhaps unconsciously, not to forgive someone for perceived wrongs done to us. Rather than work through our feelings of anger and hurt, we allow them to build into a cauldron of resentment.

Lest you feel like some kind of monster for having these feelings, remember that most of us have swallowed the poison pill at one time or another. Listen to gossip, and you'll hear how bad the boss is, how nasty the in-laws are, how insufferable parents are, and how ungrateful friends are.

These stories, usually exaggerated as time goes on, are told over and over again out loud and in the secret places of our mind. In fact, one definition of resentment is "angry and hurt feelings re-sent, again and again" Rehearsing our anger leads to resentment.
