Win without a Word

Sharon’s situation reminds me of an important truth about respect found in 1 Peter 3:1-2: “Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.” I know we touched on the topic of submission in chapter 7, but I want us to focus on a different aspect of it here. In this verse Peter says that our purity and reverence as wives may just be the key factor that draws unbelieving husbands to the Lord. (If that’s true, imagine what our purity and reverence could do in the hearts of believing husbands!)

We’ve said it before: A respectful attitude has a powerful impact. Imagine a married woman back in the early days of Christianity. She hears Paul preaching the gospel at the city gates, and her heart is touched. She decides to follow Christ. She returns home to her husband, a devout Jew, who is not convinced that Jesus is the Messiah. Would you think there’d be a little tension in that home? For sure!
