You’ve probably heard the expression “expletive deleted,” meaning that a blasphemous or obscene interjection has been censored. In fact, the word expletive can be used to mean “interjection.” It also refers to terms that are inserted into a sentence for rhythmic or syntactical reasons, such as the word it in the sentence “It looks like rain,” or the word there in the sentence, “There seems to be a problem.”

The Least You Need to Know ◆ Noun determiners indicate that a noun is to follow, and include the indefinite articles a and an and the definite article the.

◆ A preposition is a word that links its object to other parts of the sentence.

◆ Conjunctions are words that relate parts of a sentence to one another. Coordinating conjunctions relate parts that are grammatically similar. Subordinating conjunctions relate parts that are grammatically dissimilar.

◆ Interjections are sounds, words, phrases, or whole sentences inserted as exclamations.
