action steps
• Coffee is an “anti-nutrient” that can get in the way of normal vitamin and mineral absorption, including iron, magnesium, zinc and potassium. Coffee drinkers, should drink more water than non-coffee drinkers, and unless you pay special attention to your calcium intake, caffeine can leach calcium out of your bones, which will make them more brittle.
• If coffee is the first thing you put into your system in the morning, add a hundred calories or so of carbohydrate to minimize the acidic effect. Try a non-dairy latte or a slice of whole wheat toast if drinking your coffee black.
• Learn to love black coffee. Savour the taste of the bean — a large mocha with whip, or a caramel frappe is full of saturated fat and calories.
• Stay away from coffee if it gives you heartburn or makes you feel nauseous — opt for tea instead. Tea, which also contains caffeine unless it is herbal or caffeine-free, is full of antioxidants and fat-burning qualities!
