Chapter 10
âI canât believe I thought this was a good idea.â Jason kept one eye on the road as he scrubbed a hand across his forehead. His knee-jerk reaction to Kylaâs nearly being run down two days ago had clearly overridden his determination to control his impulses.
âWe are past the time for second thoughts.â Kyla, wearing a pair of kill-him-now denim shorts and a flowing tank top the color of a perfectly ripe pineapple, shifted in the passenger seat to face him. Given the excited expression on her face, heâd have thought she was a kid heading out on her first trick-or-treat run rather than moving into the neighborhood of a rumored crime boss. âGiven Tristan seems to be our common denominator, itâs only logical heâs who we should be keeping an eye on.â
It made sense. In theory. But theory hadnât included the reality of bunking with Kyla. Just the two of them. No doubt with endless hours of close quarters ahead of them.
Now, in another ten minutes theyâd be pulling up to the front guard gate of Faustus Estates for a meet and greet arranged by Eden St. Claire. Kyla was right.
Too late to turn back now.
âWhat about your job?â Jason asked. âYou have a trial starting on Monday. Shouldnât you be focused on that?â
âIâm a woman. I can focus on a multitude of things at once. And weâre given the option of working from home when necessary,â she added with a dismissive shrug. âIf something comes up at the office, Penny will call me.â
Jason shook his head. He couldnât get rid of the feeling that this plan of hers, of theirs, was going to end badly.
Maybe there was still time to turn this around. Maybe there was another option Jason hadnât come up with. But other than camping out in his car and following Tristan Wainwright around Sacramento for the next few days, he had zilch. That meant this all-encompassing idea was it. He sat uncomfortably in his seat. Maybe this was just his irritation at the fact that heâd had nothing to do with the plan itself. By the time Kyla told him about it, everything was already in motion, which left Jason to worry about all the things Kyla and Eden probably hadnât considered. âWhatâs going to happen when Tristan recognizes us from Juliaâs place?â
âA. Youâre assuming he will,â Kyla said dryly. âHow clever can he be, given what heâs gotten mixed up in? And even if he does recognize us, itâll just throw him off-kilter and off-kilter people make mistakes.â
âYes,â Jason said slowly. âThey do, donât they?â
She went on as if he hadnât spoken. âB. Barnaby spoke with Tristanâs fatherââ
âHe what?â Why was he just hearing about this now?
âYesterday. Theyâre friends,â Kyla explained as if his IQ had suddenly tanked. âTheir kids attend the same private school. Well, did. Tristanâs younger sister Alicia still goes there butââ
âTristan got booted last Christmas for selling pot to three members of the faculty,â Jason said. âI read his file.
