FIG. 105.—Mishmai Pipe.

It is remarkable that none of these pipes of Burmah or Assam are of the Chinese small-bowled type, in spite of the fact that both the Karens and Shans trace their origin to China, while the Nagas, Mishmai, and Lushai occupy a region that has long been under cultural influences from the same source, since it is on a Chinese trade route. The Shans are a trading people, and Nyoungwe lies in the Ruby Mine area, so possibly the unique pottery bowls of this city were derivatives from patterns brought by early Portuguese or Moorish traders, while it would seem that the Karens and Nagas pipes are also based indirectly on European large-bowled models. It is interesting to notice the wide use of canes as pipe-material in tropical forest regions; the difficult problem of boring a stem and mouthpiece does not here present itself, as it does to people of cooler climates, where the grasses and reeds are of too flimsy a character to be of much use.
