6.2 Experimental methodology

This section describes the methods used to gather acoustic data on the monophthongs of standard Romanian. The work collected here represents a significant contribution to the knowledge and body of data on the phonetics of the Romanian language.

The data were collected both in Romania and in the United States. In Romania, recordings were made at Babeş-Boylai University in Cluj-Napoca, and in northeastern Romania. Recording locations in the United States were the phonetics laboratories at Cornell University and Dartmouth College. Recordings in northeastern Romania and at Dartmouth were collected with the generous efforts of Catalina Iricinschi and Ioana Chitoran, respectively.

A large portion of the data collection for this book was carried out during a month-long fieldwork trip to Romania, where I traveled in September 2010. I was hosted at Babeş-Boylai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, in the Center for Modern Languages in the university’s Faculty of Letters; and several recordings took place at the Phonetics Laboratory in the Faculty of Letters. Other recordings in Cluj-Napoca were made in quiet home environments.
