Chapter Seven

Jase's painting arrived the day I awoke in the form of Kamiko Tanaka, a stunning Asian beauty by anyone's standards, with an hourglass figure and luxurious black hair. I wasn't a bit surprised when UPS delivered it to my office, since I'd decided weeks ago that my life was one big snafu that went way beyond random irony into pay-back interference designed to make my days hell.

Yep, the gods had it in for me. And the whole breaking the phoenix egg thing...? It. Was. An. Accident.

I waited until Tuesday, when I knew Jase would be working, to take it to his house. Getting there around ten, I unlocked the door and went inside. The place smelled like fresh paint and looked incredibly lived in. Glorying in the satisfaction of a job well done, I slowly pirouetted to take in the details. Rich autumn tones--burnt orange, gold, deep red--had brought the living room, once so barren, to life and perfectly set off his brown leather furniture. The area rug lying on the tile floor picked up the colors of the throw pillows and smaller paintings. A purple vase here, a green lamp there... The room looked perfect for a man's man such as Jase, but any woman could feel comfortable in it, too.

Moving on, I looked into the first bedroom. It felt modern and inviting, from the imported white linen bedclothes to the black and white photos hanging on the wall. Jase's office looked great, too, with a corner desk and black leather chair on one side, and his work-out gear on the other. As for the master bedroom, I'd gone all out in there, drawing on the rich reds, purples, and golds found in the phoenix's plumage, my color palette. All in all, I'd done a hell of a job, and I'd never been so proud.

Heading back to the living room, I carefully drew the oversized painting with its ornate wooden frame from the box it had arrived in and loosened the corner protectors. I grunted as I held it to the wall, trying to decide just how high to hang it. Wishing I had help, I set it down long enough to grab a chair from the kitchen to use as a ladder. I dug my picturing hanging tools from my bag and began measuring the space so I could find dead center.

The door burst open behind me. I dropped everything I held and whirled around.

"Kesha?"

I almost fell off my chair, barely managing to land on my feet. Jase. My heart thudded in my chest, and not just because he'd startled me. I wanted to run to the guy, arms open wide, and hug him forever.

But when I turned, he stared at me with unrecognizing, steely blue eyes. "Who are you?"

Gulp. "Kamiko Tanaka, Kesha's replacement. She's helping Kaley in..." I couldn't remember in which state I supposedly opened a new office. I thought it started with an M and chose one, hoping I was right. "Michigan. Left this morning.
