‘But seriously,’ said Sarah-Louise, ‘do you think this school is actually a dangerous place for us?’

‘I’ll be honest, I have my doubts about this place,’ said Ursula. ‘But I’m still not sure what they are up to. Are they really selling students? Or are they just trying to educate them in their way and make sure they get jobs?’

‘Is there a difference?’ asked Milo.

‘Perhaps not, Milo – but in the eyes of the law there would be.’

‘What should we do?’ asked Katie.

‘Let’s try and stay out of trouble,’ said Sarah-Louise, ‘keep our eyes peeled, and keep coming back here to do philosophy. You know, I really enjoyed that conversation. It was nice to think about something besides school, and it made me think about how we treat animals, but without telling me what to do, without pushing me to think in one way or the other.’

‘That’s great,’ said Ursula. ‘That is exactly what philosophy should do – open your mind to new possibilities and questions so you are in a better place to make decisions about what you believe and how you want to live. What about you, Katie? Did you enjoy it?’

‘Oh, yes, I did. I thought it was really interesting. Thank you, Ursula.’

‘And now we’d better go,’ said Milo.

‘Come back soon,’ said Ursula, beginning to fill a bucket with fresh compost.

‘We will,’ said Katie, and Sarah-Louise waved.

They went out into the empty corridors. Only the constant distant hum of construction work could be heard.

‘What’s wrong with you?’ Katie asked Milo. She was always sensitive to his moods.

‘Don’t you think we need to do something about what’s going on?’ said Milo.

‘Do what, though, Milo?’

‘Tell someone, fight back, find out what they are up to. I don’t know. I enjoy the philosophy conversations, but we need to act!’

‘Be patient, Milo,’ said Sarah-Louise. ‘We have to be careful. It could be dangerous.’

‘I’m tired of being patient. Our friends are disappearing and coming back like dumb robots. I have to try and find out what’s going on. You guys go ahead. I’m going to explore.’

‘Milo, no, please,’ said Sarah-Louise. ‘Come with us.’

‘No, I can’t wait any longer.’

‘Fine,’ said Sarah-Louise. ‘I’m not getting in trouble just because you can’t wait,’ and she stomped off in the direction of the dorms.

Katie just stood there, looking at Milo, unsure of which way to go.

‘Go back, Katie! I’ll be fine. I’ll just take a quick look around.’

Then they heard the sound of footsteps approaching.

‘Are you really sure you don’t wanna come with us, Milo?’ said Katie.

‘Yes! Just go!’ Milo walked away from her.

Katie was at the end of the corridor when Milo spotted two Disciplods barrelling around the corner. He ducked into a doorway and watched.

Horrified, he saw them freeze Katie’s uniform and then pull her forcibly towards the restricted section.

Now what?

Milo didn’t have much time to think, but he knew he had to see what was going on with Katie. He took off after them, silently, and followed them towards the restricted section of the school, where the new wing was under construction.
