LIZZY SPENT THE NEXT day practicing her lines, wanting to have them memorized in case she ever had to step in for Lydia as her understudy, though it seemed unlikely. The cast and crew worked tirelessly to repair the damaged backdrop, and by evening, it was nearly complete.

“It looks perfect,” said Lizzy, admiring the intricate details.

“I think so too,” said Lydia, sounding pleased. “I am glad we were able to fix it in time.”

“Me too.” Lizzy smiled at her sister, enjoying the moment of peace between them. “I am proud of you, Lydia. You’ve been working hard, and it shows. You’re a talented actress, and I am sure you’ll have a bright future ahead of you.”

Lydia turned to look at her, her eyes shining with emotion. “I appreciate you recognizing my superior skills and are moving past your jealousy.”

Lizzy laughed. “I am not jealous of you and never was. I am happy for you.”

“You should be. I am going to be the star of the show, and you are just the understudy.” Lydia smirked.

Lizzy rolled her eyes. The diva had resurged. “I am not jealous, Lydia,” she said again, more firmly. “I am happy for you. You deserve to shine, and I am glad you are getting the chance to do so.”

“As you should be. Now, if you wouldn’t mind, I need to rehearse my lines. Alone.” Lydia’s tone was haughty.

Lizzy bit back a retort and nodded. “Of course. I’ll leave you to it.”

“Thank you.” Lydia turned and walked away, her posture regal and confident.

Lizzy watched her go, shaking her head. Despite her sister’s attitude, she was still proud of her. She was a talented actress, albeit a spoiled one.

“I wish she’d be nicer,” said Jane, joining her.

“I know, but she’s always been that way. It’s just her nature. Mama indulges her, and Papa ignores her. We’re the ones who must deal with her.”

“I suppose so,” said Jane. “Still, I wish she would be kinder to you. You’re her sister, and you deserve her respect.”

“I don’t expect it. I have learned to accept her for who she is.” Lizzy shrugged. “I am used to it.”

“That doesn’t make it right,” said Jane. “Family should support each other, not tear each other down.”

“I agree, but that’s not the way our family always works.” Lizzy sighed. “We’re all different, and we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Speaking of, I talked to the Phantom last night—”

“You did?” Jane’s eyes widened. “I wish you were more mindful of your safety and reputation, sister. What if he tries to seduce you?”

“He didn’t. He’s a gentleman, and he would never do anything to hurt me. He told me he had nothing to do with the rope breaking, and I believe him.” She blushed as she remembered their heated kisses. “I trust him.”

“I don’t know why. He’s a mystery, and we know nothing about him. For all we know, he could be a murderer or a thief.” Jane shuddered.

“He’s not. I am sure of it.” Lizzy’s cheeks heated at the memory of his lips on hers, the scarred flesh rough against her smooth skin.
