LIZZY SPENT THE NEXT day practicing her lines, wanting to have them memorized in case she ever had to step in for Lydia as her understudy, though it seemed unlikely. The cast and crew worked tirelessly to repair the damaged backdrop, and by evening, it was nearly complete.
âIt looks perfect,â said Lizzy, admiring the intricate details.
âI think so too,â said Lydia, sounding pleased. âI am glad we were able to fix it in time.â
âMe too.â Lizzy smiled at her sister, enjoying the moment of peace between them. âI am proud of you, Lydia. Youâve been working hard, and it shows. Youâre a talented actress, and I am sure youâll have a bright future ahead of you.â
Lydia turned to look at her, her eyes shining with emotion. âI appreciate you recognizing my superior skills and are moving past your jealousy.â
Lizzy laughed. âI am not jealous of you and never was. I am happy for you.â
âYou should be. I am going to be the star of the show, and you are just the understudy.â Lydia smirked.
Lizzy rolled her eyes. The diva had resurged. âI am not jealous, Lydia,â she said again, more firmly. âI am happy for you. You deserve to shine, and I am glad you are getting the chance to do so.â
âAs you should be. Now, if you wouldnât mind, I need to rehearse my lines. Alone.â Lydiaâs tone was haughty.
Lizzy bit back a retort and nodded. âOf course. Iâll leave you to it.â
âThank you.â Lydia turned and walked away, her posture regal and confident.
Lizzy watched her go, shaking her head. Despite her sisterâs attitude, she was still proud of her. She was a talented actress, albeit a spoiled one.
âI wish sheâd be nicer,â said Jane, joining her.
âI know, but sheâs always been that way. Itâs just her nature. Mama indulges her, and Papa ignores her. Weâre the ones who must deal with her.â
âI suppose so,â said Jane. âStill, I wish she would be kinder to you. Youâre her sister, and you deserve her respect.â
âI donât expect it. I have learned to accept her for who she is.â Lizzy shrugged. âI am used to it.â
âThat doesnât make it right,â said Jane. âFamily should support each other, not tear each other down.â
âI agree, but thatâs not the way our family always works.â Lizzy sighed. âWeâre all different, and we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Speaking of, I talked to the Phantom last nightââ
âYou did?â Janeâs eyes widened. âI wish you were more mindful of your safety and reputation, sister. What if he tries to seduce you?â
âHe didnât. Heâs a gentleman, and he would never do anything to hurt me. He told me he had nothing to do with the rope breaking, and I believe him.â She blushed as she remembered their heated kisses. âI trust him.â
âI donât know why. Heâs a mystery, and we know nothing about him. For all we know, he could be a murderer or a thief.â Jane shuddered.
âHeâs not. I am sure of it.â Lizzyâs cheeks heated at the memory of his lips on hers, the scarred flesh rough against her smooth skin.
