CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The prelude

“Just my banyan.” Cameron toggled his eyebrows in his valet’s direction. He hoped to find his bride well rested. He and Louella had bidden farewell to the remaining guests, following the rather lengthy breakfast, over an hour ago.

This suite, separate from the rest of the household, had been utilized by his father and grandfather before him. More an apartment than a set of bedchambers, it had been designed specifically for their purpose. If they’d been in London, he’d have obtained a hotel suite for them. He’d rather not have the shadow of his father lurking in the room on his wedding night. As soon as the thought crept into his mind, he dismissed it. He wasn’t a suspicious man. He’d build his own future, his own legacy.

Along with his bride.

He’d left Louella alone with her maid to change out of her bridal gown into… something more comfortable. He’d also ordered a small meal sent up for the two of them. In spite of all the food laid out, he’d not had a chance to eat earlier. He didn’t think Louella had either.

A sitting room adjoined their chambers, and he wondered, as he strode through it, which room they would settle upon. He did not intend upon utilizing two chambers as husband and wife.

Arriving at her door, he rapped twice and then waited.

“Come in.”

Cameron licked his lips and turned the knob. The early evening light filtered through the windows, illuminating his bride who sat waiting for him.

Fully clothed. Dressed as though she were expecting the highest of sticklers to show up and partake of low tea. At this moment, he realized that although he’d kissed her, and they’d pledged the remainder of their lives to one another, they’d spent what would barely amount to less than twenty-four hours in one another’s company.

He determined to remedy the circumstance as his gaze traveled around the room. A tray sat beside her, the meal he’d ordered, and she looked up at him expectantly. And then her eyes widened in surprise.

She looked so adorably taken aback that, even dismayed, he couldn’t help but laugh. He’d make the best of this, anyhow. In fact, he rather enjoyed removing a lady’s garments for her.

“I’m afraid I’m a little underdressed for this occasion,” he teased. His banyan stopped at his calves and tied loosely, exposed more of his chest than he supposed she’d ever seen on any man.

She blushed prettily. “I thought—”

“What culinary delights have been provided?” He shushed her and lifted a few covers from the plates to reveal an assortment of cheeses, meats, and bread. There was also wine and fruit. “Much like our picnic at the mine.”

She nodded. “It seems so long ago.” Her voice sounded a little thin. She was nervous. Of course, she would be.

He pulled a chair up beside her and poured wine into the glasses provided. She filled a plate for him, all of his favorites, and placed it in front of him.

Not exactly what he’d had in mind, but it was a good enough start anyway.
