Telling Stories
Among the Delaware, the storyteller occupied an honored place. Historian, teacher, and entertainer, the storyteller kept alive the customs and beliefs of the people. Most often, people gathered around the fire to listen to stories in the winter, when there was not as much work to be done. Some stories included songs. Several examples are known from the Unami Delaware. Here is one that used to be told (and sung) by the Munsee to entertain young children. Notice the mischievous suggestion that the neighbors might have eaten the woman's little boy.
