Avionce.”
March 25, 2011
“Dear Avionce,
I don’t ever want you to be worried about what I may think of you for telling me the truth. I’m not here to judge you as I told you before. People make bad choices in life. Sometimes from ignorance, society, and peer pressure. It’s what you learn from the wrong or bad choices that define who you are. At least that’s the way I see things. I sent your grandmother’s letter back to you because I wanted no parts of all the negativity that was in that letter and I agree with you, the best place for a letter like that was the trash can. Avionce, you now have to accept the fact that something’s change and some things stay the same. Your grandparents feel right in what they believe and I’m sorry to say nothing is going to change that. Let’s just pray that God touches their hearts. I’m glad that you have come to realize that you do matter. You mattered to Raymond and you matter to me as well.
What I’m about to say to you I don’t want you to take the wrong way. I’m saying this to you because I feel it’s time that you hear this and it’s only because I care about you. Avionce, you have to stop living a double life. You say that you have come to terms with your sexuality so own it and say that you are gay. Despite what society and your grandparents feel there’s nothing wrong with you being gay. Being gay to me only defines your sexual preference. It doesn’t define the person that you are. You’re still human and from your profile picture, I see that you are a very attractive young man. My grandmother use to say to me I don’t care what path you choose in life be the best that you can be. This is what I’ve always passed along to all of my own children. Don’t ever let anyone dictate who you are. You have to be your true self. I’ve always felt that whatever goes on between two consenting adults is only their business not anyone else’s. That’s why rooms were built with doors for privacy, so stop beating yourself up about the fact that you are gay and begin to embrace life. You've missed so much in life because of this stigma.
The reason I say that is this, look at all the time you wasted with your friend Raymond because of fear. You said Raymond invited you over many times to meet his family. I’m sure he did that because he liked you as a person. So you can’t be all bad. Think about it. Raymond was accepting of you. You probably lost out on a lot of good times. Avionce, you are who you are good, bad, or indifferent. This is your life. I’m glad you have good memories of Raymond. That’s what people cling to during the passing of a loved one. Reflecting on the times you share with one another.
