Our own experience is that the same basic principles that we used in parenting younger children still apply, but there is a dramatic gear shift in the way we go about it and the change of speed can be fun.

We asked a group of parents of teenagers doing one of our parenting courses, ‘What is the main parenting issue you are facing?’ Most of them replied, ‘Knowing where and how to set boundaries.’

Instead of addressing the theme directly, we spent some time talking about the five love languages and the importance of discovering how our teenagers feel loved. The parents went away and made changes in their approach. A month later, on the last session of the course, we asked whether these changes had made any difference. Spontaneously, all the parents said that their children were much happier and that the setting of boundaries had become a lot easier as a result.
