Somehow I manage to graduate from Codasco in June and am enrolled in Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. I just float and this is where the wind takes me.

At the beginning of summer, George’s dad arranges interviews for us at his company, National Steel, to work at a pellet plant in Hibbing, Minnesota. The jobs are a foregone conclusion so I think nothing of getting tanked the night before. I’m so hung over the next morning that I forget to bring my shoes.

What the hell, where are your shoes, George says, when he hears my bare feet slap on the linoleum hallway as we walk to the interview.

I pull my suit jacket up over my shoulders, Forgot ‘em, I guess.

When George’s father finds out I didn’t have shoes, he tells George, Lippo owns a shoe company, for Christ’s sake. Jesus, it’s Shoeless-Johnny-Lippo.

Of course, we get the jobs anyway. The first three weeks at the plant in Hibbing we spend our time smoking pot during work and drinking at night. Then one night George’s dad calls and says there’s going to be a strike at the plant.

These guys are pissed so if they go on strike and figure out your dad is chairman of the company, they’ll string you up, he says to George.

How do you know they’ll be able to figure out who we are? George asks, while holding a two-foot long bong between his knees. A bit of smoke swirls up from the bowl of the pipe.

Because you’re probably still wearing your Polo shirt and penny loafers, you idiot, he says, laughing.
