Figure 17: Tarot Layout
Card one indicates who you are reading for, and their state of being. Card two indicates the problem crossing the person. Card three indicates the conscious thought of the person, and card four indicates the subconscious thoughts of the person.
The remaining cards are like a U arching in time, from past to future, left to right. Cards five, six, and seven are the past events influencing the situation, with five being the furthest past and seven being the most recent. Cards eight, nine, and ten are the present. Cards eleven, twelve, and thirteen are the future if the current course of action is followed, with eleven being the immediate future and thirteen being the furthest future. I use this spread for general life-readings and detailed situations.
For myself, I use simpler spreads, and pick one to three cards most mornings before I begin my day. If I planned on doing a relationship spell and picked the Hanged Man, Knight (young male) of Cups, and Ten of Wands, I would determine it was not the best time for this spell. The Hanged Man urges me to surrender and see things in a new way; the Knight of Cups, the air aspect of water, also asks me to think or intellectualize things, or indicates a partner who is too intellectual and not emotional enough; and in my deck, the Thoth deck, the Ten of Wands is called the Oppression card.
If I picked the Two of Cups, Fool, and Sun cards, I would say that the spell was a fortunate thing to do for my higher good. The Two of Cups is called Love in my deck, the Fool indicates unlimited opportunity, and the Sun card is blessings and success.
Often the answer will not be as clear-cut as these examples, so really strive to learn your cards.
Runes
The runes are a system of magick and divination from the Teutonic tribes, and is primarily associated with Norse traditions. Each rune is simultaneously a pictoral symbol, a word of power, and an archetypal mystery. Runes can be used for divination and for creating change through talismans and amulets.
Many systems of the runes exist, but the most well-known among modern pagans is the Elder Futhark. Below is each rune and its various interpretations upright and reversed. This is a very basic list of meanings. Just as each tarot has a multitude of lessons, so does each rune, and each is open to interpretation by different scholars and practitioners.
To truly be understood, each rune is a mystery of power, and must be delved into through meditation and serious study of runic lore. Use this as a basic springboard to further a deeper understanding of the system.
