I sat twiddling my feet as I waited for Natalie at the doctor’s office.

She had called me at the salon and told me to get to her apartment fast. I’d stopped working on my client’s hair right away and asked another stylist to finish it, before rushing to see what was wrong.

Natalie could barely open the door, so there was no way she would’ve made it driving.

“What’s wrong with you?”

“Girl, I don’t know.”

I helped her get dressed and drove her to the doctor’s office. She’d managed to call and make an emergency appointment.

As I drove, I asked her if she’d rather go to the hospital but, being an entrepreneur, Natalie wanted to go to her regular doctor because of insurance.

I was a bit scared as I waited. Natalie had lain in the backseat, clutching her stomach.

“Please don’t vomit unless you absolutely have to,” I’d said.

“Really, Emlyn?”

“My bad. Is that insensitive?”

Natalie laughed. “You wait. I’ll remember this when you get sick.”

She’d thrown her arm around my shoulder and I walked her into the office.

Now as I waited, I tried not to be too anxious.

Finally, Natalie came out from a back room and I stood to help her.

“Would you believe food poisoning?”

“No shit.”

She nodded.

We left the office of Natalie’s general practitioner, which was in a building of other doctor’s offices.

“Dr. May Loo: Dentist, Dr. Kion Rhuel: Family Dentist.” Natalie read the names on the office doors as we passed. “Dr. Lucy Paul: OBGYN.” The door to Dr. Paul’s office opened.
