APPEAL PROCESS

When you compare your financial aid awards, you will see that the different colleges have packaged your financial aid in different ways. You can compare these side by side on the Financial Aid U Cost Comparison Worksheet (page 295).86

If you think a college has made an error, check with that college’s financial aid office. If your circumstances have changed, let them know. If going to the university depends on the aid package and your package is not enough, you can file what’s called an appeal. There will be procedures for doing this, and the college is under no obligation to match the package another college might have offered you. But if you do want the college to reconsider its offer, use their appeal process. Appeals can be effective, though you will need to provide documentation if you’re appealing based on changed circumstances. Ron Lieber wrote about the “appeal season” for the New York Times (April 5, 2014), and the bottom line is that colleges do listen, though perhaps selectively. It’s really impossible to calculate your odds, but Lieber’s reporting suggests that you should give it the good old college try. Particularly “if similar schools offer radically different amounts, it’s worth finding out if there was an error.” 87 You have nothing to lose by asking and everything to gain by putting together documents that support your appeal.
