* * * *

Jacob observed as Jasper said hello to the human team. He wasn’t sure what he’d expected, but it wasn’t that.

He’d thought Jasper would be as opposed to this as his father had been, even though he’d convinced Alpha Rhodes to do it. Knowing it had to be done didn’t mean he had to be happy about it, though, so it was a surprise to see him acting as if nothing was happening.

“If everyone is ready, we can start walking around,” Jasper said.

Jacob could tell the human team was tense. They knew what had happened in surfeit territory when Kari had led them to find Turner chained to the ground in a shed behind the alpha’s house. As soon as they walked around the house, Jacob looked, but the shed was nowhere to be seen. It had been taken down, and he was relieved.

He was sure the surfeit had worked hard to make sure nothing strange would pop up. They didn’t want the humans to have anything negative to say about the surfeit. They wanted them to leave, and the best way to make that happen was to make sure nothing amiss was happening.

Still, Jacob couldn’t help but wonder if that was the truth or if they were acting for the humans. It wouldn’t surprise him if that was the case, but he couldn’t exactly ask Jasper if his father was abusing another carrier.

Unfortunately, there was no way to know how many carriers the surfeit had. They’d known about Turner because of Kari, and there had been others, but they’d been sold a while ago. There could still be other, younger carriers, and they might be in trouble if Alpha Rhodes didn’t change his behavior. Jacob doubted he had. He knew the humans were coming, so he’d have made sure they wouldn’t find anything strange, but Jacob knew better, and he suspected everyone else in the forest did, too.

“As you can see, everything is fine.” Jasper waved around as they walked. “Most of our territory consists of forest grounds, which comes in handy when we shift.”

“Are all of you skunks?” Suzanne asked.

“We are. My father, well, he’s very traditional. He doesn’t like mixing with other shifters.”

“Why not?” Luther asked. “Does he think other shifters aren’t good enough?”

“Not exactly, no. But he’s a man of his time, and that’s what his father taught him. You know, twenty or thirty years ago, things were different in the forest. We didn’t mix. It just wasn’t done, and that’s the way my father still thinks.”

“What do you think? You’ll be the alpha in his place one day.”

“I will, and I have nothing against mixing with other shifters. Not that I’m going to tell my father that. He wouldn’t be happy with me, and I like my teeth where they are.”

Jacob blinked. He wanted to ask what Jasper meant, even though it was quite obvious. He was pretty sure Luther hadn’t missed it, either. The man grimaced, but thankfully, he didn’t push.

Jacob was sure Luther and his team wanted to make sure the forest was peaceful, and it was.
