Book Three: The Mystery Revealed

Steve sat on the banks of the lava river, trying to think of a way out of his current predicament. When none occurred to him, he got up, took out his torches, and began to walk upstream. He didn’t really expect to find a way out that way, but since his only other option was sitting beside the river until either he starved to death or the skeletons found him, this seemed his best move.

The underground ravine through which the lava flowed seemed to stretch on and on. The one under the village hadn’t been a third this size. He walked for what felt like hours, while the cavern slowly curved in an enormous crescent. Then, finally, he saw the far end and gasped.

The far wall of the cavern was a solid wall of pouring lava from the ceiling to the floor. It cascaded down from at least thirty blocks up to spill over the banks and collect into the mighty river of fire. It was an awe-inspiring sight.

It was also disheartening, for it meant that Steve could not possibly go any further in this direction. This had seemed the better of two options; it was already turning out to be a dead end, and it still was the better option. Where did that leave him?

Steve didn’t really care to just sit down by the banks of the lava river again, so he decided to walk up to the falls and see them up close. He munched a little bread as he went, to keep his strength up. At least he still had plenty of bread, so it’d be a while before he starved to death.

Up close, the falls seemed even more massive and terrifying than they had from a distance. They were nothing less than a solid wall of fire pouring down endlessly, making what Steve thought must be something very like an impassable barrier. You could carve through stone, but what could you do about this?

The heat radiating off of the barrier was intense, and Steve had to step back a few blocks. With nothing better to do, he sat down and opened up his inventory again.

He had a badly-worn iron pickaxe, three of the strange blue gems, which he thought might be diamonds, judging by what the skeletons had said, a few stacks of stone and dirt, torches, bread, and a couple of oak blocks that he’d picked up on a whim on his way to the cave entrance and had completely forgotten about.

Then inspiration came to his rescue. Of course! He had enough wood to make a crafting table! And then enough left over to make a few sticks, which he could then use to make another pick!

Feeling foolish for not thinking of this earlier, Steve quickly turned the blocks into boards, and then the boards into a crafting table, which he set up right there against the wall on the banks of the river of fire. He turned the four remaining planks into eight sticks and reached for his pile of stone.
