* * *

Harmony awoke the morning after the Manor party alone. Cam had left before daylight, and although she hadn’t wanted him to go, she knew her time on the island would be far more complicated if he didn’t. People tended to look askance at women who slept with their bosses.

Not that it worried her overly much. December was a stone’s throw away, the festival set to begin. By the end of January she’d be gone, and whatever gossip and ill feelings they might inspire with their affair would die down quickly once she left. She was more than willing to deal with the fallout for a couple of months if she could keep seeing Cam.

The night had been amazing. Magical, in a way. At least for her. Who knew that laughter could add such a new dimension to sex? Logan had been as businesslike in bed as he was in every other facet of life.

Funny to know that she’d felt closer to Cam, more connected, than she ever had with a man she’d spent two years with. It came from knowing Cam MacRurie cared—actually cared about her experience rather than just his own.

When Logan had dropped his bombshell she’d been more angry than hurt, which had made her question her motives for being with him to begin with. It had become comfortable, and his staid demeanor had seemed to make him the perfect partner. Yet, in the end his defection hadn’t broken her heart as much as dented her pride.

Being with Cam seemed risky—way outside her comfort zone in a million ways—but since it was preordained to last only for a short time, she could simply enjoy his company without too much angst.

Checking the time, she hopped out of bed and into the shower, smiling to herself at a few unusually achy muscles, all an indication of how thoroughly loved she’d been the night before.

Her phone rang right on time, and Harmony hurried to pick it up.

“Hi, Mum. Everything all right?”

“Yes, yes,” her mum replied, as she always did.

Sometimes Harmony wondered what her mother wasn’t sharing, perhaps in an effort not to distress her daughter.

“You sound bright and cheerful this morning.”

Harmony stifled the chuckle rising in her throat. “It’s a beautiful day here, and last night there was a party up at the Manor. I had a good time.”

“Hmm...” Her mother didn’t sound convinced. “Are things still crazy there with the festival? No chance of you coming to Yorkshire over the holidays? Even for a couple of days?”

“No, Mum.” Why did her mother keep trying to rope her into her Yorkshire trip? “I’ll have to be here for the duration. There’s supposed to be hundreds of people coming through, and although Cam says there’ll be additional medical help on hand, he and I will still be the first line of defense.”

“Okay, okay. It’s just...”

There was a wistful tone to her mum’s voice...a sorrow Harmony felt down to her toes.

“It’s just what, Mum?”

“Oh, nothing important. Tell me more about what’s going on there.
