Chapter 14
Refractometer
What It Is
A refractometer is a simple hand-held instrument which is used to measure a variety of solutions from cutting oils to soups to acids to sugars. Actually, the refractometer measures dissolved solids. In dealing with plant juices, the majority of solids are compounds manufactured from carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. These compounds are primarily carbohydrates (starches and sugars). The refractometer consists of a tube-shaped instrument with an adjustable eyepiece at one end and a prism with a plastic cover at the other end. The light passing through the liquid being tested is refracted (bent) in relation to the amount of dissolved solids found in the liquid.
It has been said that the refractometer measures the health of the plant. The readings obtained from measuring plant juices can be compared with the chart at the end of this chapter. To obtain readings in the excellent range or higher requires the plant to be in good condition from a balanced mineral perspective. Since plants grow from minerals or mineral energies, it is these minerals (or lack of them) which is being reflected in the refractometer reading of the plant juices.
To bring plants from consistent low readings to consistent high readings usually requires a year or two of intensive building with accompanying foliar sprays. It can be done, though, as demonstrated by the experience of many farmers across the United States. Basic soil fertilizing is the first step. Using only quality, high energy, bio-enhancing products is the second step. Foliar spray assistance is the third step.
