Chapter Nine

We stood across the playground from each other. It felt like a scene from the movie Mean Girls and Medusa Jones was definitely playing the role of Regina George. The witches and warlocks took in the standoff with wide eyes and immediately scurried to their seats in the audience section to watch the shitshow unfold. It was abundantly clear they wanted to see violence. I was pretty sure their wish would come true if the rancid expression on Medusa Jones’ face was anything to go by.

Sassy started to wander off to find a seat. I grabbed her by the sleeve of her dress and pulled her back. We might not have a clue what was going on, but I was pretty sure we were the stars of the program. Looking like idiots wasn’t going to go in our favor.

Taking a deep breath, I stared at the woman who had lived in my nightmares most of my life. I was no longer a child. If Medusa Jones came at me, I could defend myself. I didn’t deserve her beatings then and I wouldn’t allow them now. I was an absurdly powerful and wildly irresponsible witch filled with light and dark magic. I enjoyed throwing trolls and eating cookie houses. My favorite hobbies were banging my mate and shopping. Outwardly, designer clothes and shoes were my thing. Secretly, I loved healing idiots and adored my family and friends. My children were my reason for living. Bottom line… I was going to live through today. Medusa Jones was going to rue the day she’d tried to take what I didn’t want… and then changed my mind and wanted.

My eyes narrowed and tunnel vision kicked in. Everything around me seemed to disappear except the witch I despised. The childhood pain that occurred so long ago, felt like yesterday. From the sneer on her lips as she looked me up and down, my guess was that she hadn’t changed a bit—gorgeous and ghastly. But something was amiss. I glared at the nasty piece of work. Slowly the corners of my mouth tilted up. The sight before me was glorious. Medusa Jones’ panty lines were showing. No self-respecting wannabe Baba Yaga would be seen in public with freaking panty lines. Baba Yaga might be stuck in the 80s, but she always sported a thong under her spandex.

“What the ever-loving outline of a hooha?” Sassy choked out, trying to stifle a laugh. “Bronwyn Bloodworth is wearing leggings that feature her camel toe.”

Of course, Fucking Derrick chimed in. “The skank’s leggings are so tight I can see her religion. And you will be happy to know she is not Catholic.”

“Good info, little dude,” Sassy said, patting the troll on the head.

“Fashion disasters,” I said, taking in both of the witches who wanted the jobs we had punted, then regretted, then got ourselves mixed up in this hot mess to win back.

Fucking Derrick began to growl and nearly lost his tiny debatably sane mind. The words that left his hairy mouth were horrifying.
