Contrasting the Campaigns: Why Interunion Coordination Mattered Most

Throughout both campaigns, the American unions, UFCW and SEIU, faced a “home union problem” in which their respective British counterparts, USDAW and GMB, did not want to jeopardize their positive relationships with the employers in question by actively supporting a transnational campaign. Resolving this conflict of interest between SEIU and GMB proved essential for winning the campaign against G4S, while failure to achieve interunion coordination between UFCW and USDAW harmed the Tesco campaign considerably.
