Pattern

Pattern comprises lines, shapes, values, colors and textures that enhance the surface and contribute to movement. A viewer is attracted to a specific feature in the pattern—a color or value, for example—and unconsciously searches for it throughout the artwork.

The patterns in natural and manmade environments are a rich source of ideas: texture, growth patterns, and industrial, mechanical, building and ornamental patterns. Avoid randomness and be aware of how you establish the important patterns. Use similar shapes and forms, for example, a dominant linear pattern or a predominance of dots and circles. Alternate patterned areas with quiet areas to give your viewer’s eyes a rest.
