Savvy gave in. Teaching the mageborn asshole—the kid, not Keiran—a lesson ranked higher on her priority list than annoying her roommate. Instead of spending the afternoon searching for the amulet while Keiran watched with an amused expression, she let him escort her to a clothing shop.

A clatter from one of the alleys broke through the chilly silence, and without thinking, she moved closer to Keiran. He shifted in front of her, tucking her against his back with his arm. A crow, like the one who’d followed her that first day, poked its beak out of the shadows and blinked at them.

Keiran relaxed, and Savvy frowned at her automatic response to jump into his arms. Her hand was still fisted on the back of his coat, and she belatedly released him as he turned toward her.

“Was that Cam?”

She glanced back at the bird, who’d returned to pecking at a shiny bit of trash. “Maybe. He’s fond of birds.”

Savvy sighed, admitting silently he was probably right about the clothing. Without Keiran’s brief heat, the cold snaked back into her limbs, and she shivered. As if she needed another sign, he shrugged out of his coat and draped it over her shoulders. An assassin with a heart of gold. Awesome.

Savvy held the edges closed under her chin and tried not to be too obvious about breathing in his scent. The same thing happened every time she tried to go to sleep. Somehow, the bed smelled like him despite the sheets being changed multiple times. She’d suspect him of rolling around in it when she wasn’t there… but they were always together.

The street was empty except for the two of them and the crow. Savvy could easily imagine that they were the only two people left in Lesk. Her breath huffed out in a cloud as he stopped in front of a clothing shop with sturdy, lowborn cloaks in the window.

The owner tsked when she saw Savvy’s thin cotton tunic and pulled out a black, long-sleeved version in what felt like flannel. Soft and warm but supple enough to move with her. Savvy agreed to that top plus one other and a set of gloves. She drew the line at new pants.

Keiran stood by the curtain that acted as a dressing room while she tried on the tops, a hulking warning to anyone that drew near. He tried to get her lined pants and a new coat, but Savvy didn’t want to go to the trouble of sewing new secret pockets into her gear. Her current set-up would work until they left Lesk. Clarion City was on the coast, where violent tropical storms kept the cold at bay.

By the time they’d finished, the sun was setting again. Savvy swore the days lasted only a few hours during the winter with how little sun they got. As expected, Keiran wanted to wait until morning to visit the lowborn family.

Savvy wore her warm new tunic out of the shop, and Keiran carried the small sack that contained her previous shirt and the other stuff he’d bought.
